The Vicious Cycle

This is a relationship post. I don't normally post feelings that pertain to my "personal" personal life, but this is my venue without having to feel I need to censor myself. So this post is about my vicious cycle. My vicious cycle is my marriage. I love my husband dearly- but at the same time I feel I cannot keep up to his expectations. We will see what happens after this last talk, but really this is like the three strikes rule and I am almost to the point where that is it. Maybe, it is me. I just can't be myself around him, I feel I walk on eggshells, and he isn't the person that I used to adore anymore. Mind you my head is fresh off of the argument and my face still hurts from crying like a mo-fo. I kept a blog post from 2004 in my notebook portion of my yahoo acct. and this is what it said- "I am afraid of what Ed came hom e soon after, he always is foul when he gets home. I am always afraid he will blow up like he did last night. I think its the afraid pat. I don't know how to be. I try so hard to keep the home maintained and find my balance, last night It simply wasn't good enough . Aways, try harder but w/ no avail. What do I do next?Pls. tell me." (writing angry that day?-why yes) Fast forward 6 years. Same situation. When will this vicious cycle end. Will it be when I say I can't take it anymore. Some days this is true. But I don't see myself without him. I guess I am not ready to throw in the towel yet and he hasn't either. Though yesterday, I had moments of doubt but I am a fighter and I will fight for the big things that matter to me. I guess this is one of them. Suck it up, Jen...Suck it up.

Props to SAHM/Ds of this World

Yesterday, I volunteered to babysit a friend's two-year old daughter. My friend was starting a new job as a cocktail waitress and she had been a Stay-At-Home-Mom (SAHM) for the entire time she had her daughter (call her S), so she asked me if I could watch S at the last minute. I, of course said "yes" but then I quickly remembered I hadn't watched anyone else's toddler-aged kid since I was 12-14 (my babysitting years). I had S for a whole 8 hours- which might be cake for some but not for me. Yes- I do have two kids of my own but I never really knew the true meaning of SAHM status. I always had either the daycare, preschool or a relative watching my kids while I went to work (work meant mental break). Anyways, it was hard work watching S. I had to make sure she didn't get into dog dishes, break something, or eat something she wasn't supposed to. She didn't let the TV be her babysitter, she wanted to color, walk around and throw not roll balls around (around my breakables- good thing onyx chess sets don't break).  Plus, I had change her "pull-up" every so often (not potty trained). I forgot about the "pull-up"/diaper part of life.  I got paranoid by this because I was afraid I was going to have to change a #2 (whew, this didn't happen). By the end of my "Shift", I was ready to give S back. S didn't cry while I had her (what a relief), but when i did give her back her tantrum side went off (sign of being tired). At the end, I was tired (I wanted a nap so bad) and I mentally was exhausted because I had watched the every move of a two-year old.  I truly had forgotten what it was like to have a toddler-aged kid. Props to the SAHM/D who don't get breaks in their lives. I love kids, but watching them - oh so not my forte.

Remembering

So today is April 8th, 2010. I sometimes forget that I change, that people change, that I may be moody or sad or happy or flirty or angry. I tend to blame this on the foods I eat. I will feel gross if I eat too much sugar or fat and feel great if I eat healthy things. Same with what I drink. Me and alcohol = love/hate relationship. I like alcohol but it doesn't love me. I can get moody or happy, I tend to talk a lot, be gushy, be honest, sometimes regrettably too honest. My cutting point is probably half a glass cause one or more drinks and my thoughts go out the window (so if you are with me only one glass please). Lately, I been forgetting to be nice and smile. I want to go into the dark hole and hide and that has been the dark hole I been trying to dig out of for years. I like to think I have progressed but some things make me want to regress and I fight it. Really, I don't want to lose but some actions tend to beat me up and I want to wonder why I did what I did. I have learned from other people which has taught me to hold on to what I have. Be thankful for your family, your true friends, your neighbors and the encounters that decide that your life is better than what you think it is.

Generally Speaking
I truly am blessed with my family, my friends, my job, my dog and other pets that are with me in present time. Sometimes it takes external forces to help me realize that I need to be proud of my accomplishments and what I have created as a whole. I also need to stay focused on being a positive human being. Whether that means I let people change lanes on the freeway in front of my car in traffic, smiling at someone at the supermarket when you know the other person is not having the greatest of days, or just plain on being a nice, polite person. This reminder of what is a growing process of myself, a current metamorphosis as you will, checks myself into reality from time to time. I can no longer be angry at the world and it's doings. It is what it is and it is up to me to help change at least my surroundings. So with this general mantra, I will try to be better at who I am and what I do...starting today.

My Myspace revisited

It has been a LONG while since I visited my Myspace Account. My page is like a black hole with memories till 2008. I even had a myspace blog post from 2007 saying I liked myspace better than Facebook, then I changed my mind in 2008. I recently logged in and found that it is mostly music-oriented, lots of game apps, flashing ads and entertainment centered. I do still have a few friends on there (mostly silly friends like Pickle, Gummy Bear and Nabaztag) but I looked around and about 5 or so of my friends still update their page. Anyways, it is pretty funny reading my profile back (see below). Slight things have changed like I no longer take french lessons, my tv shows have changed and my occupation is no longer what it is but overall my likes and views are the same. Do you still have a myspace account?

Yes - We had an Earthquake

Earthquakes are memorable events especially when you are in them. I have been in a few quakes in my life. I remember being 90 miles east of the big 1989 San Francisco Earthquake, I don't think I panicked for that one. In fact, I was at home on the telephone with a friend and told them to hold on we were having an earthquake. I always think back to that day because I was so nonchalant for that quake. I remember a couple of years ago, I was sitting at work on the computer and experienced a slight shake. It didn't last long so I was not in the position to duck and cover. I got up from my desk and it became watercooler news. Every time there is a small quake I am relieved. I was taught that small quakes are good to have because it releases tension on the fault. You don't want the tension to build up because it becomes a big quake (similar to yesterday in Baja). Ironically, I was at a dinner a few weeks ago and we talked about having and putting an emergency bucket together. I guess the key is to take a 5 or 10 gal plastic trash can with a lid and fill it up with camping supplies, water tabs and freeze-dried food, that way if you need to grab the bucket and go somewhere it is accessible all in one place.

Yesterday's quake hit me by surprise, I was getting ready to leave for our Easter Parties and saw our breakfast bar lights shaking. Then the roll came and I instinctly went under our dining table. I totally spaced on the fact that I had two kids who never felt a tremor like this before. Eventually, I ran outside and met up my kids and husband and watched the windows across the street rattle. As soon as I saw that the rattle was gone we all went back inside the house. I am grateful that my kids were not freaked out by this experience. I am especially thankful that their dad was the one who led them outside safely. Of course, I got a fun lecture on how I was totally unprepared and lacking earthquake knowledge. They teach you in school to duck under your desk in an event of a quake, I was told this has changed. I guess tables are not the safest places to hide under because they can fall on you. Also, I guess if you have children you should try to find them to make sure they are safe. This I didn't do either. Oops, #fail.  But what I will always remember about this Easter quake is that it is the day that prompted me to brush up on my natural disaster skills.

Easter Greetings

Every year the Easter Bunny comes and gives treats to the little girls and boys of America. I think this is a great tradition. Though, I hope I don't find a hard boiled egg in my yard six months from now (that would be gross). I absolutely love Easter for the candy alone. Those Cadbury Mini Eggs and the Peeps are my two favorites, which reminds me I need to stock up on these before the day is over. Have a Hoppy Easter!

Chatroulette is nothing to brag about

So I just spent 5 minutes of my life experimenting on this thing called Chatroulette. Chatroulette is this random generator that allows you to connect with others....kind of like random video skype. You allow the app to open up your web cam and you allow yourself to be connected with strangers. Strangers! What kind of game is this? It is pretty silly, I can see how this can get some buzz. The tool allowed a piano player named Merton to become a YouTube sensation pretty much overnight. That is great for Merton and granted he is pretty talented but on the other end of the camera, there are mostly stares and people with nothing else to do. It was nice that Merton got to showcase his skills. But seriously, chatroulette is a waste of time. I have heard that you may get a random celebrity on the other side of the camera but I am sure the odds are very slim. And if you do, what would you say? What would you say to any of these people? In my 5 minutes of experimentation, I got lots of staring faces, a couple of dogs on webcam and static picture of Michael Jackson, a guy who looked normal but then typed if I wanted to see him naked and then someone who didn't ask me at all. Not a "game" for kids, rules say you have to be 16, but it is the internet, there are no rules. The great thing about Chatroulette is there is a "Next" button, but in my opinion the "Never Again" button would be nice to have.

Here is a sample of Ben Folds playing on Chatroulette (he is the talent to the bored people)and a interview with Merton (they share a uncanny resemblance):

My Tooth Fairy Blooze

As a mom to a little girl who believes in Santa Claus, Leprechauns and Tooth Fairies, I will have a lot of explaining to do someday. My question is when?  I cringe at the moment I will have to sit her down and tell her that all this time I have been getting up in the middle of the night as “Santa” and the “Tooth fairy”. A couple of nights ago, E lost another tooth. I think this makes 2 in the last 3 months. My first thoughts on when she told me she lost another tooth was *not another 5 dollars*. Anyways, another tooth fairy adventure has passed and I still am in great debate over my “talk” with my 7 yr. old. I know I should be truthful with her but in what capacity? As much as E-How and Google has gave me more insight on how to "break" it to her, I am just a chicken when it comes to this stuff.

Good to be home

Ah vacation, takes you away from life. I did miss life. I missed interacting with my friends/tweeps. I missed my dogs (and they missed me). I missed cable tv with a zillion channels. But going on a cruise for 8 days away was much needed. That is where I was, just in-case you were wondering, I went on a cruise to Acapulco, Ixtapa and Manzanillo, Mexico. I was pretty much MIA from twitter, facebook and my email.  I focused on things I didn't get to do very much or had done at all. I got to read a book without interruption, attend a wine education session, sing karaoke badly, listen to the ocean, needlepoint, let a baby sea turtle go in the ocean, lay on the beach, go on a wave runner, and use my spanish skills (uno, dos, tres and so on...). I drank, ate and was merry for a while. No news was good news while I was away, my time away deleted any Oscars, earthquakes, Celebrity ODs or any local happenings. I am now catching up on this stuff now. I usually equate my vacations to happenings in the news. i.e. Catalina=Katrina, Vegas=shuttle explosion. While on board,  I realized the power of a captive audience,  I put $50 into their casino because I liked the idea of a penny slot machine that made you bet 90 pennies at one time so you can play a silly game, I drank samples of Bailey's and Kahlua from mouthwash cups, I tried on bad replicas of cocktail rings and contemplated buying the ring cause it was only $11.88 instead of $25, and played a game of bingo (and lost).

Overall, I had a good 8 days away, I enjoyed people watching and spending time with my family. This trip was simple and enjoyable. But I have to say I am glad to be back home. I am more appreciative of what is in my true reality after being kept away from it all. I enjoyed my trip to the grocery store this evening. It was good to drive again. It was good to do a few loads of laundry and good to write this post.

Yes, I watch this stuff

I am so entertained by Japanese TV. Why don't they have a channel dedicated to this stuff on regular american cable tv? Monkeys and dogs doing sit-ups...Genius (thanks to facebook friend Myron for exposing me to this gem)

What's your Manifesto?

I drove by Lululemon in La Jolla last night. I pronounced it Lulu- MON. My friend said oh, there's Lulu-lemon. I didn't see the "Lemon". I had this poster printed out for the longest time and found out it was their company manifesto. I still need to write mine, but did find that many of these insights from Lululemon are funny, practical and very true. Do you have a manifesto? And if so, want to share?
Image via lululemon.com

the lululemon manifesto

  • Drink FRESH water and as much water as you can. Water flushes unwanted toxins from your body and keeps your brain sharp.
  • A daily hit of athletic-induced endorphins gives you the power to make better decisions, helps you be at peace with yourself, and offsets stress.
  • Do one thing a day that scares you.
  • Listen, listen, listen, and then ask strategic questions.
  • Write down your short and long-term GOALS four times a year. Two personal, two business and two health goals for the next 1, 5 and 10 years. Goal setting triggers your subconscious computer.
  • Life is full of setbacks. Success is determined by how you handle setbacks.
  • Your outlook on life is a direct reflection of how much you like yourself.
  • That which matters the most should never give way to that which matters the least.
  • Stress is related to 99% of all illness.
  • Jealousy works the opposite way you want it to.
  • The world is changing at such a rapid rate that waiting to implement changes will leave you 2 steps behind. DO IT NOW, DO IT NOW, DO IT NOW!
  • Friends are more important than money.
  • Breathe deeply and appreciate the moment. Living in the moment could be the meaning of life.
  • Take various vitamins. You never know what small mineral can eliminate the bottleneck to everlasting health.
  • Don’t trust that an old age pension will be sufficient.
  • Visualize your eventual demise. It can have an amazing effect on how you live for the moment.
  • The conscious brain can only hold one thought at a time. Choose a positive thought.
  • Live near the ocean and inhale the pure salt air that flows over the water, Vancouver will do nicely.
  • Observe a plant before and after watering and relate these benefits to your body and brain.
  • Practice yoga so you can remain active in physical sports as you age.
  • Dance, sing, floss and travel.
  • Children are the orgasm of life. Just like you did not know what an orgasm was before you had one, nature does not let you know how great children are until you have them.
  • Successful people replace the words “wish”, “should” and “try” with “I will”.
  • Creativity is maximized when you’re living in the moment.
  • Nature wants us to be mediocre because we have a greater chance to survive and reproduce. Mediocre is as close to the bottom as it is to the top, and will give you a lousy life.
  • lululemon athletica creates components for people to live longer, healthier and more fun lives. If we can produce products to keep people active and stress-free, we believe the world will become a much better place.
  • Do not use cleaning chemicals on your kitchen counters. Someone will inevitably make a sandwich on your counter.
  • SWEAT once a day to regenerate your skin.
  • Communication is COMPLICATED. We are all raised in a different family with slightly different definitions of every word. An agreement is an agreement only if each party knows the conditions for satisfaction and a time is set for satisfaction to occur.
  • What we do to the earth we do to ourselves.
  • The pursuit of happiness is the source of all unhappiness.

Off to see Tara Donovan one last time

On Sunday, I ventured out to MCASD Downtown. I wanted to go see Tara Donovan's exhibit one last time. Her use everyday objects in her art are phenomenal, she brings out the richness, depth, and texture in huge form. Some materials that she uses- Scotch Tape, Mylar film/tape, pins, toothpicks, straws, buttons, tar paper, plastic cups, styrofoam cups. I snuck a few no-no pics. The exhibit closes on February 28th. I wonder how they will get all these sculptures out of there in one piece.

    Beautiful Day Today

I ventured back outside today. I am not an advocate for the cold. This morning, I jogged/walked the trail at Lake Murray. Good to see lots of people enjoying the day boating, walking, jogging and skipping stones. I love San Diego.

    Happy Anniversary to Me

I knew February was a good month. It's my dad's birthday (5th), my son's birthday (17th), Chinese New Year (Any new year is a good year), President's day (happy birthday to my $1s and $5s),  good ol' Valentine's day (as hubby would say it-a nice manufactured feel good holiday) and the most important day of February- my twitter account anniversary.

In a year (and a some odd days) and over 2,700 tweets later, I have managed to make lots of priceless friendships (you know who you are). I have discovered the land of Social Media (thanks @bcarroll7). I went to BlogWorld (discovered more social media folks). Went to BarCamp San Diego (discovered smart cookies that use the computer in ways I find unthinkable). Went to lots of tweet-ups both educational and just plain fun. Rediscovered the gift of giving. Lastly,  I have discovered lots of new things about me- I like interacting, engaging, caring and finding out about new things. So how long have you been tweeting?

    My Superbowl Memories 2010

Ahh, the Super Bowl, what entertainment you bring year after year. The game itself, Meh- but I was happy that 2 former San Diego stars got their ultimate dream. I was more entertained in the commercials. I noticed my brain cells slowly dying as each second passed by watching these bits of stupid. I did encounter a few thought provoking keepers (see below). And, I did encounter some creepiness (seals personified, talking babies, dogs taking off their own bark collars and putting them on their owner, underwear wearing office environment & more). Never mind the product. After seeing these commercials, Pepsi may have done something smart with their ad budget.

What life could be like in 20 years

I don't think I would buy this car but what the message of this commercial stuck with me.

Someone is going to replicate this commercial

    http://www.youtube.com/v/UJqs3D2vv4I&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0</a>" />

I can see it now- Sock Monkey Costumes and Robots doing silly things in Vegas. Great halloween ideas await.

    Clever Google

Top of mind Google, my search engine of choice. No silly tricks, just a good demo catered to me - a' la francophile. My eyeballs were glued.

What were your top-of-mind Super Bowl commercials?

    It's a bird, it's a plane, it's....

Last Friday night, a group of girls and @NBCphotog decided to hang out at a trapeze school in Del Mar. Since it was my hubby's b-day, I decided to make it a family event. After the "grown-ups" took their flights, they opened the trapeze up to the kids. Shockingly, my kiddo decided to fly like the rest of us. It was a blast. Thanks @circusfund and @iizliz for taking video.

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?- My musings

I just finished Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin. This book talks about being the Linchpin (The pin that holds things together). If you are a Linchpin you become indispensable because you are that factor that keeps things going, growing, gripping in your job or life. You become an artist who gives gifts because you are self-less and have that certain je ne sais quoi. Seth Gives numerous examples of real-life Linchpins and goes so far to say there are two kinds of workers- The Cog (a worker who does simple tasks with direction) and the The Business Owner (who wants people to be cogs so they can make the most profit). Do I want to be Indispensable- YES, ABSOLUTELY. I let my previous jobs go and didn't have the passion anymore to keep everything together (therefore dispensable). This is an eye-opening book- I related to the sections about the resistance, how the lizard brain takes over and the disconnect I had to my previous job (lack of passion- lack of being that artist). Because of reading this book: I plan to throw out my resume, I maybe proficient in those things on my resume but most of it is not who I am. I have been all over the map throughout my adult life because I wasn't mapping, I was just following paths that were given. Now is the time to sit and map out my own life. I am not going to map out what makes the most money or what is a quick fix today. I need to map out what will stick with me in the long run, do what I love to do, become happy with life again, give selflessly and without expecting something in return and become fearless. Things that will make me a Linchpin AKA Indispensable. Time for me to go to work now. Read this book and you know what I am talking about. Keys: More Cowbell, destroy your Lizard Brain, defy resistance.
