So I just spent 5 minutes of my life experimenting on this thing called Chatroulette. Chatroulette is this random generator that allows you to connect with others....kind of like random video skype. You allow the app to open up your web cam and you allow yourself to be connected with strangers. Strangers! What kind of game is this? It is pretty silly, I can see how this can get some buzz. The tool allowed a piano player named Merton to become a YouTube sensation pretty much overnight. That is great for Merton and granted he is pretty talented but on the other end of the camera, there are mostly stares and people with nothing else to do. It was nice that Merton got to showcase his skills. But seriously, chatroulette is a waste of time. I have heard that you may get a random celebrity on the other side of the camera but I am sure the odds are very slim. And if you do, what would you say? What would you say to any of these people? In my 5 minutes of experimentation, I got lots of staring faces, a couple of dogs on webcam and static picture of Michael Jackson, a guy who looked normal but then typed if I wanted to see him naked and then someone who didn't ask me at all. Not a "game" for kids, rules say you have to be 16, but it is the internet, there are no rules. The great thing about Chatroulette is there is a "Next" button, but in my opinion the "Never Again" button would be nice to have.
Here is a sample of Ben Folds playing on Chatroulette (he is the talent to the bored people)and a interview with Merton (they share a uncanny resemblance):
